These battlements have helped to defend this castle for centuries, and right up to recent years soldiers operated anti-aircraft artillery from here. Ammunition stores are still here .....

The Battlements

Legend tells us the story of Sean Flynn, a 15 year old drummer boy who's headless ghost walks these battlements, drumming his drum in the dead of night. He had been sent to the town of Dover late one night on an errand. Through the darkness he walked with only his drum to keep him company. Unfortunately, two greedy soldiers had heard that he was going to town and that he carried a substantial amount of money so on his way to the town they ambushed him and despite the boys efforts to fight them off, one mighty blow from their sword took off his head and he lay dead at the foot of the castle.

People have since heard the sound of drumming coming from the Castle battlements and some even say they have seen a headless figure walking along them very late at night! Could this be the drummer boy?

Recently the tv show Most Haunted visited Dover Castle, and Medium Derek Acorah went to the Battlements together with Yvette Fielding and a camera crew. Derek seemed to be getting messages from Sean, the drummer boy, and informed us that Sean was a proud and brave drummer boy but that he missed his mother and wanted to be with her. Derek said that he would help Sean to go to the light where he would be with his mother again, but we heard no more after that, so does the drummer boy still walk the battlements? Or has he finally laid to rest?

There is so much to see and do here at Dover Castle that you need at least five hours minimum in order to see everything. There are two gift shops here, one is located at the entrance to the tunnels and the other is located next to the castle keep. There is a coffee shop and the NAAFI in which to have meals and plenty more to see and do.

Dover Castle is owned and maintained by English Heritage.
