Many different buildings once stood on the site of the County Hospital, including a prison and a work house. Recently, the old County Hospital was knocked down and a new building built on the site. During construction four workmen were killed in an accident and it is thought that the ghosts of these men haunt the building now in the region of Lugg Ward. Staff have made comments about strange happenings during night shifts when they have gone for their break. If possible the staff are given a bed or mattress to lie on during their break so that they can get an hours sleep, these are usually in a side room or day room. Staff have reported blankets and sheets being pulled down off them, a feeling of a mattress being depressed as if someone were sitting or leaning on it, the feeling of someone standing by the side of them and one nurse was woken one night to find her arm suspended in the air by something she could not see!
Others have reported hearing muffled voices and babies crying - possibly ghosts from the
prison or work house and others have felt uneasy walking through the hospital into the old
part where Dore and Kenwater wards are based, with its long quiet corridor leading past old
empty wards that were once bustling with staff and patients!
